H.E. Ambassador Önen's address at the Anzac Day Dawn Service
There are some events in history whichsignificantly alter both the destiny of a nation and the flow of timewith their consequences. Without any doubt, thebattles of the Dardanelles and the Gallipoli Campaignthat took place during the First World War were among such events.
Gallipoli means a lot to the nations who valiantly fought in those historic lands and seas. Even today, 106 years later, No Turk, New Zealander or Australian can stand on the shores around the Gallipoli Peninsula without being overcome with the unmatched tragedy and the triumph that was enacted there.
Thousands of men of immense bravery lost their lives or got injured in the course of the battles. While the New Zealanders and the Australians were serving their countries, the Turks were defending their motherland.Yet all were well aware that they were representing the dignity of their respective nations.Their valor and sacrifice transcended borders, nations as well as generations.
The tragic human sacrifices of war endured by our grandfathers and their loved ones are still deeply shared by our peoples. They have been transformed to a strong bond of respect and friendship between Turkey, Australia and New Zealand; which is clearly evident at this solemn ceremony. We all came out of this war as victorious since we transformed war into peace and turned Gallipoli into a symbol of enduring solidarity and friendship.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, demonstrated in his extraordinary message of comfort and compassion to the families whose beloved ones died on the Turkish soil. He said:
“Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives, you are now living in the soil of a friendly country; therefore rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side, here in this country of ours.
You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace.
After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”
As the Ambassador of Turkey, I pay special tribute to all the soldiers who perished in Gallipoli. May their souls rest in peace.
