Speech by Ambassador H.E Dr. İsmail Hakkı Musa delivered for the International Forum on Energy Transition in China
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Distinguished Guests of the Forum,
-I am honored to share my views today via this video
message.
-Unfortunately, I am not able to join you in person
due to the inconvenience of my schedule.
-I would like to thank National Energy Administration
(NEA), International Renewable Energy Administration (IRENA) and Jiangsu
Provincial Government for organizing the International Forum on Energy
Transition (IFET 2023).
-This Forum provides a perfect venue for the
discussion of various energy-related issues.
-The question of energy transition is of key
importance and will shape our common future.
-Therefore, ensuring global energy security requires a
global and comprehensive approach.
-Closer cooperation
and a more effective dialogue among governments and industrial entities are
strategic necessities.
Dear Participants,
-Global demand for energy is continuously
growing.
-Population growth, increasing urbanization,
industrialization and economic growth require us to diversify our energy
resources.
-The development of nuclear energy is therefore critical
to ensure sustainable, secure and clean energy resources.
-Türkiye considers
energy as an important area of cooperation not only on a bilateral and regional
scale but also globally.
-Among the OECD countries, our country is the second
highest growing economy, and the third among the G-20 countries.
-Türkiye has the highest energy demand for the last
two decades in the OECD.
-At this point, I would like to emphasize that Türkiye
and China, two rapidly growing economies, have similar approaches on energy
transition.
-China has been increasing the share of renewable
energy such as wind, solar and hydroelectric power.
-Chinese companies have also reached a higher stage on
nuclear power generation.
-Türkiye on the other hand, has been carrying out
concrete measures to diversify its energy mix.
-We are determined to increase the share of
sustainable and nuclear energy in total consumption.
-Türkiye has the5th biggest installed capacity
in renewables in Europe, and the 12thin the world.
-Currently 55 per cent of our total installed capacity
(103,4 GW) comes from renewables.
-Similar to China’s carbon-neutrality target by 2060, we
aim to attain net zero emission by 2053, in line with the Paris Agreement.
-Our
President announced this target as well as our new green development reform.
-The achievement of net zero targets constitutes our
common goal.
-For these reasons, nuclear energy infrastructure has
been rapidly developing in Türkiye.
-In this respect, Türkiye has launched the
construction of two nuclear power plants: one in the south (Mersin Akkuyu), the
other in the north (Sinop).
-The construction of Mersin Akkuyu power plant started
in 2018.
-Upon their completion, these two power plants are
expected to produce a total of 69 billion kilowatts energy.
-This is equivalent to almost 10 per cent of Türkiye’s
energy requirement.
-Additionally, a third power plant is planned to be
constructed in our Thrace region; in the northwest.
-Please let me emphasize on this occasion once again
that Türkiye is seriously considering to cooperate with China for the
construction of the third power plant.
-As you all know, we have already significant
cooperation in the energy sector.
-For example, Hunutlu power station in Türkiye’s Adana
Province is the largest Chinese foreign direct investment in our country.
-I firmly believe that the cooperation with Chinese
companies for the construction of third power plant in Türkiye will
significantly contribute to the development of our strategic relations.
Distinguished Participants,
-Energy transition is and will continue to be one of
the main priorities of Türkiye.
-I believe that there are many opportunities for the
development of energy cooperation between Türkiye and China.
-Energy cooperation will have a multiplier effect in
other bilateral areas of collaboration.
- Bilaterally,
regionally and globally, we need to work together in solidarity to achieve the
goal of a cleaner and greener future for the next generations.
- I believe that this significant Forum will yield
fruitful outcomes in that direction.
-Thank you for your attention.
