Speech by Ambassador H.E Dr. İsmail Hakkı Musa delivered in the 5th World Media Summit in Guangzhou
Distinguished
Ambassadors and Members of the Diplomatic Corps,
Ladies
and Gentlemen,
- It is my
honor to participate in the 5th
World Media Summit and on this occasion to visit the beautiful city of
Guangzhou for the first time.
- Türkiye, throughout
history has been an integral part of
Asia’s historic and cultural spheres. Today, in terms of cultural, economic and
political relations, Türkiye continues to be the gateway between Asia and
Europe.
- By taking
its unique location at the crossroads of
three continents, Asia, Europe and Africa, Türkiye prioritizes increased
connectivity and economic cooperation.
- In this vein, in 2010, we put forth the Middle
Corridor initiative. - This
Corridor starts
from Türkiye, crosses the Caucasus, the Caspian Sea, the Central Asian
Republics and finally reaches China. - Similarly,
in 2019, we announced the “Asia Anew
Initiative” with a view to enhance
our relations with the Asian countries in all spheres on the basis of
common interests and objectives.
- Under the
scope of these two initiatives, Türkiye aims to build a strong connection
between the most western and most eastern ends of the Asian continent.
- We hope that these initiatives will enable the countries of Asia to
enhance win-win cooperation in
political, socio-cultural and economic dimensions.
- We also
believe that they will contribute to the efforts for ensuring peace, stability and sustainable development
in our region and beyond.
Dear guests,
- The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI),
proposed by His Excellency President Xi Jinping a decade ago; also embraces the historic trend of economic
globalization and addresses countries’ development needs for development
and modernization.
- Türkiye supports this important Initiative from the very beginning.
The Belt and Road Initiative,
together with the Middle Corridor
and Asia Anew initiatives show that
both Türkiye and China, as two great civilizations, clearly understand the significance
of multidimensional connectivity in today’s world.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to point out that, with the rapid development of mass
communication technologies, media and
online resources have become indispensable components of connectivity. As some of the speakers have
already pointed out yesterday, social media has evolved into a source of
news and information.
- However, it also has turned into a
platform for disinformation activities including spreading biased and often
false information. New technologies such as generative AI can exacerbate
the situation and serve as a tool for those looking to distort facts and
engage in disinformation.
- Unfortunately,
we continue to observe that certain
third parties’ media organs may distort the wordings and images when
broadcasting news about an event or a country. My country suffered too much
from such distortion. This observation also
concerns China to some extent.
- A very
recent example of the biased and false
reporting is the coverage of certain western media organs of the ongoing crisis in Palestine.
- It has
been nearly two months since the clashes began. And the bleeding wound in Gaza has reached an irreversible stage.
- A
nation is under the threat of being
completely annihilated.
- We
highly appreciate the valuable efforts
displayed by China to bring this catastrophic situation to an end,
especially during their Security Council
Presidency. - Like
China, Türkiye continues its diplomatic
initiatives for the immediate cessation of hostilities between the two
sides.
- We also render every effort to ensure unrestricted humanitarian aid is delivered to Gaza.
- We
believe that a just and lasting peace in the Palestine issue will only be
realized by the implementation of a
two-state solution.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
- At this
point, I must underscore the power of
the media during such a crisis.
- Media is
indeed one of the most effective tool and source for understanding the real dynamics of complex crisis, as the
one in Gaza.
- As long as
the international community has access to unbiased and real time information,
they will exert greater pressure for
upholding peace.
- Nevertheless,
faced with such a grave suffering,
media should always follow the moral
compass of humanity. In
today's environment of rampant disinformation, ethical journalism has
become more important than ever.Because when someone loses their
moral compass, they will be obliged to wander
in uncharted waters.
Dear Guests,
- To better
understand and obtain unhindered information about each other, it is important
to use our own media channels and
encourage cooperation among them.
- This will help
dispel myths and misconceptions,
counteract propaganda and prevent
the spread of false information.
- It will also
shatter the biased echo chambers
that sometimes trap wider audiences.
- We are pleased to have established such a
partnership with China.
- To name some
examples;- Türkiye’s
mainstream news channel NTV and China
Media Group have already worked together on several occasions. - CRI, which is part of China Media Group, has a radio
channel in Türkiye since a decade. - Our national broadcaster TRT and national news agency Anadolu Agency have
representatives in Beijing. They provide information about China from its
source to the Turkish public.
- Türkiye’s
- It would be
mutually beneficial to forge closer cooperation
between these Turkish media corporations and their Chinese counterparts, such as Xinhua news agency, CCTV, CGTN as
well as media organs at local level.
- I have no
doubt that a new phase of cooperation in the media domain will further enhance
the strong historical and people to
people bonds between our countries.
- And our journey of joint development will
enable greater prosperity to us all!
Thank you!
